As a retired UNC professor, Hollie dogsits full time. Joe isn't as lucky, and he has to leave each day to run a department at a large university in Raleigh. Poor Joe. Hollie's "job" is so much more fun!
Together, we use our 30 years of experience caring for dogs to provide quality care for both overnight and occasional doggy daycare in our home.
Nothing is off limits in our home unless you say it is. The dogs have access to the backyard all day and in addition to playing frequently (and napping), we take daily walks (at a dog-sniffing pace) to keep energetic dogs happy. You'll get to see your pup in action and gain peace of mind from the photo and video updates we send a few times a day. You might also see your pup in your news feed if you like the Barkmore House on Facebook, Tumblr, Pinterest, Twitter, Instagram, and Youtube -- google us and see what a normal stay looks like and enjoy the extras we include. Who knows, your pup may go viral!
When the playing is done, and cuddling or napping is in order, Hollie's lap is always available, or your pup can find his/her own private space in the 3,000 sq feet in the Barkmore House or enjoy laying in front of the fireplace or getting some sunshine on giant, custom lounging pillows on the screened-in patio and deck; both are favorite pastimes of Barkmore House guests.
With Hollie home all day, our guests have their own full-time recreation director to play ball with them, take them on walks, and hide their stuffies. We even celebrate birthday parties (pointy hats and all) when doggies turn another year old during their stay (or is that 7 years older)?
If your pup sleeps with you at home, they'll be sleeping with us here. We love when they snuggle up next to us, under the down blankets or on top, whatever they're used to. If they sleep in a bed in your bedroom, we have a perfect little niche in the wall right by Hollie's side of the bed that the doggies just love. If your pup likes to sleep alone or downstairs, we have two guest rooms, a second master downstairs, and two couches they can choose from as well.
All natural, top-quality treats are plentiful and toys lay all over the house. At the Barkmore House, having fun is a priority but safety comes first (review our safety policies below). We are committed to providing a safe, memorable vacation where your dog's every need and want is catered to. Here, dogs are showered with love and attention, pampered, and catered to as VIP guests in our home. If you're looking for a pack leader, you need to keep looking because the dogs figure out really quickly that we're the hired help, and the only rules they have are those their mom and dad have at home (we don't want to create bad habits while they're here)!
We welcome smaller puppies, adults, and senior dogs. At the moment, for the safety of our older chihuahua, we cannot accommodate high-energy large puppies but small and medium puppies, and adult dogs of any size or energy level are welcome. If you have a very calm or very well-trained larger puppy that can understand the social cues dogs give when they do not want to play, we're happy to meet with you to see if it's a good fit.
We can administer oral medications and injections and are happy to cook special foods (e.g., rice, chicken, beef) for any guests that need them (or just plain want them). While it is not our practice to feed our guests "people-food," or any food that's not their own outside of parent-approved treats, we will be happy to prepare special meals, upon request. Hollie, the Barkmore House chef, cooks roasted chicken and fresh, mashed sweet potatoes to one of our regular "foodie" guests and fries eggs for two Pomeranians to ensure their diet is the same here as it is at home. We can usually get our picky eaters to eat by hand-feeding them, but if not, we have numerous tricks that will disrupt even the most dedicated hunger strike!
It's your baby's vacation, and a stay at the Barkmore House is your gift to them. It's our job to make it the best experience it can be and we take that responsibility very seriously.
This is a happy, loving home full of cynophiles (which is just a pretentious way to say dog-lovers)! Your dog's stay at the Barkmore House will be memorable for both your pup and you because you'll have plenty of pics and videos of your baby having a pawsome time to add to your vacation scrapbook. They may even forget to miss you!
We'll leave the light on, the toys out, and the down blankets clean and fluffed. All you need to do is book your reservation, travel safely, and enjoy the peace of mind knowing your best friend is in the good hands of a full-time, professional dog-sitter in a lovely home environment.
Once we are contacted about a stay, we will hold dates for that stay until we have the Meet & Greet. This results in inaccuracies in our calendar so please message us to ask about availability.
None of the Barkmore House guests are ever outside of the fenced yard without a leash. They are never outside unsupervised or left alone with other dogs; they eat only their regular diet; all-natural, high-quality treats; and premium quality, non-splintering chews only if their parents permit it and only when supervised. Our guests are not allowed to meet people or dogs on walks and nothing small or dangerous is left on floors or counters. We ask that people call us from the driveway instead of using the doorbell because we do not open our front door until the dogs are behind inside closed doors or a gate. We have installed a gate on our front porch (not in pic) which provides an additional barrier. Guests must be up-to-date on their vaccinations and shot records are required. If there is anything we have not thought of, please message us.
