I have had dogs of various sizes my whole life. Through the years we have had an old English sheepdog, cocker spaniel, chocolate lab mix, and a shepherd/husky mix. I have dog sat for my family members/roommates chihuahua, German shepherd, bichon frishe, belgian malinoise, and some that no one knew exactly what they were. I helped my aunt with her rescue, who was abused and took some time acclimating to people.
Now, we have a 10 year old puggle, who really only cares about food. He is friendly but protective of his food. He is respectful of others while they are eating, but will finish anyone's meal if given the chance.
Our house is at the end of the road on a lake with a great path through the forest. If your dog is comfortable off leash they are safe to roam or it makes a great walk on leash. If they like the water, even better! The porch is gated off, so if they like to be outside they can enjoy the sunshine.
If it is a weekend boarding, we wouldn't be leaving the dog for more than an hour or two. We both work during the week so the dog would be left alone for about 9 hours. If you are looking over the summer, I am a teacher so it would be closer to a weekend schedule.
