Those times when it is necessary to leave your pet can feel quite traumatic for both pet and owner. Many of us are reluctant to start packing in case he sees the suitcase and goes into a panic. I understand how stressful this can be but there's a lot that can be done to help your dog through this period of separation.
I have over a years full time professional experience working in a rescue in San Pablo caring for and maintaining the environment of up to 40 dogs. I am comfortable handling dogs of all sizes and temperaments and am very familiar with dog behavior and body language Over the last few months I have been boarding/pet sitting and walking dogs full time, primarily through Care. com and have excellent reviews and references.
I offer In-Home Pet Sitting which for homes with multiple pets is a good solution allowing your dog to remain in his familiar surroundings. Dogs need a minimum of 3, 1 hour visits which include a couple of 30 minute walks, as well as feeding, changing water, petting and conversation. During the period when nobody is home I like to fill a Kong or a puzzle toy to entertain him or hide a few treats around the house for a game of find.
For single dogs I prefer that they not spend too much time alone fretting. With your permission I would elect to take him with me on errands and to the park with my own dogs. I have one large senior female lab mix who is very friendly and a dachshund chihuahua mix so whatever size your dog is he has someone to play with. I can stay overnight at your home or alternatively depending on the situation board him at my house.
I am not particularly worried about temperament unless he is literally 'Zoltan Hound of Dracula' If he's not generally dog friendly I have the room to keep dogs safely separated without resorting to cages. A situation where a dog doesn't know how to be friends with his own kind is I think very sad. I have had a lot of success helping dogs with this problem through the walk. In this situation my husband walks one dog and I walk the other keeping a good distance and with the dogs on the outside. There's something about walking together that helps dogs relax and share the experience. I've found that after a couple of walks dogs can be brought closer together without any problems until they can eventually walk side by side. This has to be done very mindfully and with complete control but can be hugely beneficial.
These are just a few examples of the services we offer.
A happy dog is a tired dog and we take dogs out daily on hiking adventures, or to the beach. If they have excellent recall (this has to be proven) they can enjoy off leash dog parks, as well as the opportunity to discover the local neighborhood. I want the dogs in my care to really have fun at my house. We are lucky in that we have plenty of room and extra dog beds. We have plenty of toys although these are given out and monitored to avoid fights. Dogs have 24/7 access to our huge backyard to to play and take care of business.
I am also very tuned in to each dogs individual needs both emotional and physical. Some are simply shy by nature and just need reassurance and cuddling. Some need a quiet safe place to adjust.I am also aware of age and health related issues.I am red cross certified and am experienced administering medication including insulin shots. I am also bonded and insured.
Lastly, the most important element for a successful and happy visit is your input. I want to know your dogs perfect day, is likes and dislikes, any phobias. If we decide on boarding he should come with a t shirt that you have been wearing and preferably his own dog bed. He can stay on the diet he is used to or I can feed him the same that high quality diet I give to my own dogs. Finally, rest assured you will receive daily updates including pictures of your dogs activities for your peace of mind.
