I began boarding dogs as a way to learn about different breeds at a time when I was considering adopting a second dog. Many years later, my dog Ernie and I could not be happier with our revolving crew of dog buddies!
I love dogs because they teach me to be in the moment. I am reminded to take joy in the simple things: eating, sleeping, and playing.
Dogs are inspiring!
I currently work from home, allowing me to spend lots of time with your dog.
I focus on giving affection, exercise, and calm-assertive leadership.
Typically I host dogs from one family at a time. Occasionally another family will request days that overlap with an existing reservation. In this case I will ask you how you feel about sharing days. Reservations still operate on a first-come-first-serve basis, so if you don't want to share dates, you don't have to. No pressure! This only applies to dogs I have watched before, so "new" dogs will be the "only" dogs. This way I get to know a dog before I consider mixing.
I am excited to host dogs that are adventurous. Ernie and I like to get out and explore with our guests. Dog parks, swims in the river, and day hikes are our favorite activities.
As a middle-aged dog, Ernie is slowing down a bit and has also been enjoying dogs that like to spend lazy days in the yard or tour the neighborhood at a snail's pace- so senior dogs are a hit here as well.
A bonus is my willingness to provide consistency for your dog(s) - I am happy to follow your usual schedule and will take care to support your approach to training. Knowing your commands and your dog's quirks are important to me. I want your dog to feel like I speak your language and am aware of his/her needs.
About this sitter:
I have lived in Portland for over 11 years. During this time I have worked as a wildlife sanctuary intern, waitress, nanny, caregiver with individuals with developmental disabilities, preschool teacher, social worker, and metal smith. I currently work part-time from home as a data collector in the medical/statistics field. In my free time I like to explore the wonderful natural areas that surround Portland. I also enjoy organic gardening, long distance running, vegetarian cooking, and canoeing.
I grew up on a dairy farm. We always had a dog or two or three. Over the years there were Spaniels, Shepherds, Labs, and many, many mutts. I can't imagine a life without dogs.
Meet my pet:
Ernie is a happy, healthy 9 year old lab/schnauzer who I adopted as a puppy from the Oregon Humane Society. He has always taken a passive roll with other dogs. He is a big boy, but a gentle soul.
With energetic dogs Ernie is playful.
With shy dogs Ernie is sweet & curious, never hyper or pushy.
Even small dogs are at ease because he is not rough or intimidating. He has a calm and quirky confidence that shines.
To sum it up, Ernie is the perfect gentleman!
About my yard
I have a large, securely fenced backyard. Dogs can explore, dig, and play in the entire area.
There is a wading pool for hot days and many shady spots too.
My experience administering medication:
I have experience giving pills, eye drops, topical treatments, and
I am also comfortable giving subcutaneous injections with some instruction.
