Pet care experience

Hey! I'm Matt - and the dog in my photo is Boy who passed away in September 2023 after 15 wonderful years. I am 37 and have a Master's Degree in Social Work. I live in Greenpoint just 2 blocks from McCarran Park and work from home. I've always had dogs and cats in my life so I'm comfortable with all breeds and sizes. I am happy to discuss flexible rates for those with financial limitations and members of the LGBTQIA+ and/or BIPOC community.

Fabulous. Everything I want in a dog sitter. Communicative, confident, updates without being overbearing. Would definitely leave Duke with Matt again!

We had a great experience with Matt. He was super flexible and understanding of all Tuna’s quirks and needs. Would definitely have him watch him again in future.

Matt was a great sitter! Gemma was slightly under the weather while she stayed with Matt, and he was attentive and provided regular updates about her behavior. He’s clearly experienced. I’d use Matt again for future boarding!

I like to keep things quiet and consistent, as being away from you can sometimes cause anxiety for your pet. That said, simple games, toys, and ample time outside can be a great distraction for pups! Cats all have their own oddball needs so I'll follow their lead :P. I also have experience providing medication/ topicals/ subcutaneous injections. Generally, I find giving complex medications to pets (esp cats) while their owners travel can be a challenge, so it's not something I recommend when avoidable.

Information Matt M. would like to know about your pet

Pet Parents: please try to be honest and realistic about your pets needs AND behavior. I know we all love our pets as our children - but I have sadly encountered many pet parents omit information or lie about their pets behaviors. This can and has lead to unsafe situations and negative experiences for me, you, and your pet. The more you are willing to be forthcoming about things like house accidents, or leash reactivit, or overexcitement at the dog park, the better experience we will all have. That said, let me know if your pet has any special likes/dislikes or needs to keep in mind. Things like: How does your dog let you know they need a bathroom break? How does your pet let you know something is wrong? How does your pet like to be touched or approached? What words does your pet know? What are your pets routines and favorite things/places? What makes your pet comfortable/ anxious/ fearful/ happy? Does your pet have any allergies? What is your vet info? Any local emergency contact you'd like to share?

A typical day

For dog walks, I'm flexible with style. I'm happy to let your pup take the lead on the route - or follow a designated path for safety & fun. My pup used to want to go to all the pet stores and coffee shops that give out free treats :). Otherwise I love to walk near water, through parks, or quiet streets. For excitement at home, I find a great energy release is hiding small training treats or kibble around or in a tied up towel can be really useful. Dogs get their energy out by exploring - not just by running around. So mental stimulation like sniffing/searching/earning snacks or meals is a great tool for higher energy pups. Otherwise, happy to just cuddle, play fetch/tug, or give your pup some space to snooze. Cat drop ins are usually dependent on your cats personality! Some wanna snuggle, some wanna hide. I don't take it personally either way ;)

My goal is to be sure I keep your pet as content as possible while you're away - or for the duration of our walk if not a sitting gig. Just as I would hope someone else would have for my pup. I strive to keep to their usual routine and give whatever type of attention your pet prefers. I work from home Mon-Fri 9-5 so I'm pretty flexible. Weekends and evenings are usually yoga, and dinners out. I ask that your pet should ideally be able to be comfortable alone at least 4-6 hours. Sadly I've had a number of owners misrepresent their pets needs and it has lead to stress for the pet and for everyone involved.
