I walk at the dogs’ preferred pace…or as best I can for the dogs who can never “walk” fast enough! I can walk multiple dogs at a time as well. I've always been taught to walk a dog on the left and, my preference, is to walk on the left side of the road so the dog has easy access to grass without cutting in front of me. I’ve also always kept my dogs on a tighter leash (constantly
trying to train them to heel) instead of letting them roam freely on the end of the leash but that is just because I’ve always had high energy dogs. I am more than ok with letting them roam if that’s what the owner and dog prefer. The goal of most walks I go on is to tire out the dog so I try to make it as fun and exciting as I can while not pushing the dog to the point of complete exhaustion. I also always bring water for both myself and the dog. In my neighborhood we have multiple little parks scattered along our route and when we get to those parks I let the leash extend fully and have him run around freely...while still leashed...if that makes sense. This gives him an opportunity to be out of “walking/training mode”, lets him sniff around, give him water, and let him relax before shortening the leash and resuming our walk. This definitely lets more energy out and keeps the walk exciting for him which is my main goal :)
