About Joanna

17 Years Experience Caring For Dogs

My name is Joanna, and I'm located in beautiful Santa Cruz, a doggie paradise just 5 minutes from Pleasure Point, the Santa Cruz Harbor, and 15 minutes from Nisene Marks, Westcliff Beach, and Lighthouse Field.

I'm an experienced dogsitter and walker and have excellent local references. As a volunteer for the Santa Cruz County Shelter and Golden Gate Labrador Retriever Rescue, I have fostered many different types of dogs, and worked on basic training, socialization, and leash manners. My resident dog is a sweet, well-balanced female lab who enjoys lots of water time as well as lounging around!

A typical day for your dog will include a beach walk or nature hike (on or off leash - your choice), playtime with my lab Maya, swimming, fetching, socializing, napping, and of course treats & lots of love! Walks are customized for your dog depending on their needs - it could be the dog beach, a nature hike in DeLaVega or Nisene Marks, or a romp around the Santa Cruz Harbor and to Frederick's Street Dog park. Neighborhood walks are also safe and scenic, and I'm walking distance from Chanticleer Dog Park.

If your dog isn't fond of the beach or has social issues, we can keep walks limited to dog is a great role model for puppies and fearful anxious types!

Here, your dog will get lots of exercise and fresh air, basic training when requested, and transportation back and forth to your home if needed. They will have 24-hour supervision by me personally, and 1:1 attention. I will never leave your dog unattended in my home for more than 1-2 hours. Most of the time the dogs come along with me on my daily errands, I have ample room and bedding in the car.

For safety purposes, I have a limit of 3 dogs in my home at a time, so your dog will not be overwhelmed by a large pack.

My house is completely dog-friendly with a large fenced-in grassy yard, offering both sun and shade. I am here almost all day, and they have access in and out of the house. Guest dogs are welcome on the couch and my bed, or sometimes they prefer their own crate. They are welcome to play with my dog's toys, we don't mind sharing (as long as they don't!)

Dogs are fed separately to avoid any potential food & resource guarding, and treats and toys are also monitored closely to avoid potential spats.

I can customize a rate package to fit your needs - discounts for longer term stays, dogs with special needs, and regular bookings for example.

I welcome all friendly breeds, as long as they are socialized and don't have a history of any people / dog aggression. My resident lab is well balanced and enjoys the company of other dogs, she is very gentle with smaller breeds and shy / submissive dogs, and tends to make them feel at ease...she greets each dog with a play bow!

For Overnight Guests:
Dogs can be dropped off anytime after 9 am, but must be picked up before 10 am the final day of boarding, or a daycare charge of $40 will apply.

For Holidays (Thanksgiving Day, Xmas Eve & Day, New Years Day) an additional $20/ per day surcharge will apply.

I also require that all guest dogs are up to date on flea & tick control.

Please feel free to contact me for more information and references!

Thank You!

Jo is a FANTASTIC dogsitter. We have known her for years and she has looked after our high energy lab many many times. She sends us pictures, showers him with affection and takes him on lots of fun trips and walks. We are always totally confident that he is being looked after incredibly well, and even though we have sometimes had to use someone else (she is in high demand,) we always prefer to leave our dog with her, as she is the person we trust most with our furry family member :)

Joanna is an awesome sitter. I suspect our dog prefers her place to ours, which is understandable as he always gets lots of outside & beach time. Highly recommend

Joanna was great with desmo, and communicated frequently with us, allowing my wife and I to travel stress-free for the holidays. Desmo had a great time, and really enjoyed both Jo and Maya's company. The daily pictures and updates were excellent, and we will definitely utilize her services again in the future. SHe is a great caregiver, and a truly warm and wonderful person.

Joanna is simply wonderful and Mia loves to spend time with both her and Maya. She spoils Mia with lots of walks, treats, and most importantly with love and attention. We couldn't ask for a better home away from home for our girl!
Johanna and Maya, her peaceful lab are wonderful! Our Chesapeake, Jesse had a great time with them on the beach, at the park and on the couch. We even got to meet up at the beach (we couldn't keep Jesse at the house we were staying at) and have a little dog/owner vacay together. Johanna did everything in her power to make sure Jesse had a good time and that we were comforted in her absence. Great DogVacay-er!
Joanna was responsive to all of our concerns about leaving our dog. Our plans changed due to a family illness. Joanna was very flexible. Joanna clearly cares about dogs and tries to make the experience fun. Joanna sent e-mail updates and photos throughout the stay. She was attentive and Maya is a wonderful playmate.
So happy we found Joanna to sit for our newly adopted 2 year old dog, Pali! From the initial email to our good-bye she was amazing! Joanna worked with our last-minute boarding request and our desire to see Pali while we rented a house in the area that did not allow dogs. Pali loved being with Joanna and Maya and enjoyed her off leash beach trips and walks around the neighborhood. Joanna met us at the beach so we could play with them too and she sent pictures, videos, and updates daily. Her house is great for dogs and Pali felt at home right away digging in her doggie basket of toys! We wished the we lived closer to Joanna. We highly recommend her to anyone in the area looking for someone to care for their dog!
Joanna was a great host and caretaker of our dog while vacationing in Santa Cruz. She was extremely helpful in working with our schedule and even referred me to another caretaker for the day she was not available. Overall, I had an excellent first time experience in finding someone to care for our dog while on vacation....thanks Joanna!
We have a high energy Vizsla and while he is a real cuddle bug, he can also be a handful. He came home happy, tried and calm, which is a testament to the amazing amount of play and exercise he got. Usually, when we leave him with someone, he comes home a bit wired and clingy. This trip, we brought him home and after a quick nuzzle, he walked right back to the car and looked expectantly. I think he wanted to go back to play with Joanna and Maya.
