I was in 4-H all nine years. Over those nine years I took care of pigs, goats, turkeys, and rabbits. My first job was working as a groomer's assistant at age 16 and eventually moved to working as a kennel assistant at a veterinarian hospital. Growing up we always had a dog and at one point of time I had a cat and then a ferret for a while before I moved off to college. I've always helped take care of the animals we've had. A little over a year ago I would often dog-sit for a friend/colleague when her and her husband went out of town. They had two large golden retrievers. We enjoyed walks, going to the beach, and cuddling. I have a busy schedule where I work part time and also attend graduate courses full-time. Whenever I can help someone out by watching their dog and keeping them company I am all for it.
I have a large house in a gated community. There is plenty of room for the animals to roam and make themselves at home as well. I do not have a gated fence but walks in our neighborhood give the dogs lots of exercise.
I may not always be home throughout the day due to running errands on the weekend but I make sure to give the dogs a walk and cuddles before and after I return. Currently, during the summer I do not work; therefore, I am here often.
I'm also awaiting a service dog to raise for the next year before sending it to a family to do its duty in helping a child or adult with their diabetes or autism. During this time I will attend trainings that are required to help train the dog appropriately.
