Families with a whole lot of space. Being outside, chasing balls, jogging, or pulling kids around on a sled for hours is an American Bulldog’s dream.
The American Bulldog takes well to training, but craves firmness, consistency, and reassurance. The trainer must be assertive and consistent.
American Bulldogs do best with an enclosed space for running and playing. An apartment is OK if you’re committed to exercising with them for an hour or two a day.

History of American Bulldog

In England, Bulldogs were first used as working dogs who caught cattle and guarded livestock, but the athletic build of the first Bulldogs was replaced with the shorter, stockier build the English Bulldog is known for today. The athleticism of the original Bulldog was preserved in the farm dogs of the American South by a few breeders in Georgia and Alabama, including Mr. John D. Johnson and Alan Scott who resurrected the taller, athletic Bulldog—now known as the American Bulldog.
Facts about American Bulldog

Good To Know

American Bulldogs are known to be pretty intense cat-chasers, so make sure you carefully plan any new interactions with cats. Most will eventually get along, especially if you raise your puppy and cat together from the get-go, but some don’t adjust so take this into consideration if you want to add a cat to the mix later on.
American Bulldog health and care

Health & Care

Height: 20” to 28” at the shoulder
Weight: 60 to 125 pounds
Lifespan: 8 to 14 years
They're a generally healthy breed, but look out for bone cancer, deafness, entropion, and elbow, hip, and thyroid issues.
They’re relatively low maintenance. Regular brushing keeps their moderate shedding at bay and they only need baths when they’ve gotten themselves into some muck. Keep the wrinkles on their face dry and keep their breath smelling fresh with regular teeth brushing.
American Bulldog personality

The American Bulldog loves people and kids, but is not the biggest fans of cats. They were once farm dogs in the South and they’re as active and athletic as you’d expect. Today, they’re more likely to be found happily living life as a family dog, but that’s fine by them. For American Bulldogs, running around the yard for hours at a time, then coming inside and curling up in the living room with their family for the rest of the night is just the kind of life they’re after.
