In addition to the following, I have recently completed the SF Fire Department's Emergency Response Training. Good, professional info for all interested.
Since I had to put my dog down December 2013 (elder dog dementia), I have had the good fortune of dog sitting for neighbors and my extended DogVacay guests. I am familiar with local vet facilities and leash laws. I am fortunately located within walking distance to two excellent specialist facilities, should any emergency happen (SPCA and SF Vet Specialists). Nothing has ever happened, knock wood. Still it's good to be on the cautious side.
As far as the dogs are concerned, it's all about attention, food and exercise. And love. I completely adhere to their normal diet. (Having a new room is enough change:) The meet and greet is a very effective kick off for the transition for a short stay. Now that I've been hosting for a couple of years, it has been terrific for me, the dog and the owner(s).
At the time, I'm working at home doing costume and sewing projects. So, it is nice to have a companion. And an excuse to take a walk! My place is on the first floor. Street access is easy. Last night I dreamt about an adult chocolate poodle. Go figure?
