About John

I'm am a self-employed environmental designer working from my clean, stand-alone 1880's carriage house. I'm set back off the street where it's very quiet with a secure urban yard, in a safe & peaceful neighborhood with many dogs. There is easy street parking for drop offs and pick ups.

I care for two very small dogs for my neighbor on staggered/sporadic basis. Both are even-tempered and play well with others. Unless we mutually agree in advance of your dog's stay, or I am hosting your TWO related dogs, your dog will never be here with more than ONE of my neighbor's two dogs at the same time.

And your dog will be in my care 'round the clock, outside on my secure deck, or sleeping indoors wherever they like. (I have large dog beds or I can use yours). There is plenty of space here to play and sleep.

We will go for daily outings around my hilly neighborhood, to Kite Hill (8 min walk) or to Douglass Park (5 min. walk) or sometimes I’ll take ‘em to Ocean Beach or Fort Funston or Chrissy Field for ultimate dog fun, freedom and exercise.

I am experienced with dogs of all sizes, and specialize in dogs with separation anxiety and other behavioral issues. I can accommodate many situations, so feel free to contact me anytime.

Thank you for your interest!

John took excellent care of our dog. He''s truly a dog person - quickly establishing a connection with her and being very empathetic, patient, caring and attuned to her needs. She's a love but also has some quirks, but the latter wasn't an issue at all and she returned to us completely relaxed. It was such a huge relief for me to feel certain she was not only in good hands, but being appreciated during the week we were away. John's awesome!

Other than one overnight stay at a boarding facility, we have never left our dog with anyone before. Our experience with John was completely positive. We had Lilah spend one day with him prior to our vacation so that she would have some familiarity with the process. When we dropped her off on the morning of our vacation departure, she ran to greet him excitedly. When we picked her up on our return home, she was happy to see us, but clearly happy where she was too. John's dog Micky Jagger and Lilah were a great mix, so that worked out well also. John is focused, attentive and gentle, and knows how to handle dogs well. Lilah was recovering from an injury, and he followed our instructions about her food and exercise to the letter. He will be the first person we reach out to when we need someone to watch Lilah in the future!

I can't say how happy I am with Timmy's dog vacay with John and Birte. It had been years since I had to leave Timmy with anyone, and as soon as I met them, I knew he would be well cared for. I was very excited to see the pic updates of what Timmy was up to while on my vacation, it really put me at ease.

They are not Timmy's home away from home whenever I might need to travel again, and can't take him.

Thanks again!!

John is amazing! His relaxed manner, caring spirit and obvious love of dogs, is a great comfort to our whole family. Our dog is afraid of many people, but is extremely comfortable and relaxed around John, and his dog, Micky. Malcolm
Thanks to John for looking after Barney so well. Our request was last minute, and John was flexible in meeting Barney beforehand and accomodating our changing schedule. Micky Jagger is great and he and Barney were friends quickly, although Barney knew who was boss! We picked up a happy dog, who was very happy to take it easy back at home - although who wouldn't need to chill out after a weekend with Micky Jagger!

John was fantastic! He made our first DogVacay experience great, and we (and our pups) look forward to working with him again! We loved knowing that Minnie and Loki were having fun with Micky, and we really appreciated the photo updates!
John is excellent. Great communication and Nikki always seem to enjoy spending time at his place. She definitely get a lot of outdoor time over there.
Gracie, my 9 year-old Springer Spaniel, returns from John's place very relaxed and calm. He does a great job and I highly recommend him.
John was great - available the week of, and patient with my very anxious phone calls. He was extremely flexible on timing (we had an early plane flight) and his house was very dog friendly with the patio and couch. Bix was excited to go and sad to leave!

John is awesome!!

My initial experience with dogvacay was not a good one. My dog was placed with John after her initial sitter proved to be really inexperienced.

He sent me a sweet message to let me know that Mya was in good hands & sent pictures throughout her stay so I knew she was okay.

He gave her lots of love and attention and she really seemed to love him when i came to pick her up.

I'm so grateful for John - couldnt be happier with this experience.

From the diligent following of feeding, walking and medicating instructions to the completely extra fluffing and eye goop cleaning, John surpassed all my expectations as a first-time DogVacay client. I'm sure Jacques was disappointed to come home to only one dog bed (John has three), no dedicated dog couch (John has one) and gently warmed meals (to which I say, Jacques, you shall have gently warmed meals the day you make enough money in films or in the circus to buy me a microwave). Jacques will definitely be back.

Nikki seemed very happy after her stay with John
John gave excellent care to Nico--he even took him to the beach, washed his bed and sent us wonderful pictures. We'll definitely use John again. -S+D in West Oakland
My 10 year old dog Amelie had her first overnight stay with John this weekend. I knew based on meeting him that I was leaving her in good hands but was still even more delighted when I picked her up and saw the blissful, contented look on her face! She was happy, relaxed, ate all her meals (despite her picky eating habits) had gotten plenty of exercise and also loved lounging on the “dog couch” (definitely one of her pleasures). John is terrific – any canine or human would be lucky to hang with him!

John was absolutely great with Rascal!! He really knows dogs and has that magic touch of creating dog compatibility with other dogs!! We'd sing his praises even if he wasn't already our friend. John is the BEST!
Chalupa will never go to a kennel or camp again! He had a wonderful 'vacation' with John...made some new doggie friends, and came home completely stress free. Not to mention that John was really patient at dealing with the teenage son who was in charge of Chalupa's drop-off and pick-up! Thank you John!!!
